I totally LOVED this book. My husband is in the Army and was deployed 8 months after we were married. This book hit very close to home for me, my husband's name is Aaron too, and more than once I cried. I know that loneliness that only comes from a deployment, the stress and the worry too. This book should be given to all military wives, especially us Army wives!Product details

Suspended Animation eBook Joy Awe Reviews
When I first picked up Awe's debut novel I expected it be a literary remake of "Army Wives" with too much sentiment and not enough pragmatism. Awe does neither and I enjoyed the style she has to offer much more than the plot itself. It reads somewhere between autobiography and fiction which reminds me of a whimsical, and far less gory, version of Tim Obrien. It's pithy and melodramatic enough to drawl you in while being easy enough to read to carry you (and your attention span) along for the ride. The anecdotes, especially an incident involving potpourri, are charming. Even if you can't sympathize with her plight as an educated military spouse, their is instant empathy as the character's life has taken an unexpected turn toward disillusionment. Additionally those she interacts with remind one of the cliques we experience in our youth that we all (including the author) hoped to leave behind, but still can't help watching... like a car crash. I hope that what she has to offer in the future retains her pithy and sometimes biting humor with just a touch more jadedness.
This book is well written and the characters are engaging and believable. I felt the truth of the experiences of a young bride trying to adjust to the culture shock of a new marriage, a new country and a new way of life all at the same time. I hope this novice writer continues to write and hone her craft.
I could not put this book down once I started it! The characters were very well written and the story flowed easily. I agree with the previous review where you will be laughing one minute and then wiping a tear from your eye the next. Can't wait to see what Joy Awe has up next!
This isn't the type of book I would normally pick up and read, but I'm glad I did. Parts of it will make you laugh out loud. Parts of it will bring a tear to your eye. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable read.
This is a well written, honest tale of the life of an Army wife. Even as someone with no direct military experience, I enjoyed this book and didn't think that the military jargon was excessive or confusing.
Pretty intense for the situation it talked about. Seeing that some people in this book know what really went on beyond the curtains, in a little town of Netzaberg Germany.
Allison had no idea what she was in for when she married a military man. Newlywed and just settling in to the army base in Germany, her new husband is deployed to Iraq along with the rest of the soldiers on base. Left alone in a foreign country with no job and no family, Allison has find ways to stay busy and make friends with the other army wives who share her experience.
At times heartbreaking, frustrating, and often hilarious, Allison's new life is never boring. This is a wonderful love story. When a spouse is at war, a couple quickly learns what is really important in a relationship. But this is also a love story about friends and the ties that bind the women left behind when there is a military call to action.
